Born and raised in Jamaica, Shernett Swaby has always aspired to be a designer. At the age of 8, she was already designing her doll's clothes and mending her own. Knowing exactly what she wanted to do for the rest of her life, Shernett Swaby attended The International Academy of Design immediately after High School and graduated in 1998.
After design school she started an underwear collection catering to both men and women. Hoping to use the collection to raise funding for the long waited women's wear collection. This underwear collection soon took off and was sold in over 20 lingerie stores across Ontario. Not wanting to get distracted by the underwear collection, Shernett shifted her attention to her women's wear line.
In 2001 she opened her first women's wear store at 898 Danforth Avenue and was very successful in finding a niche in the industry. At her store she offered free alterations on her collection for the life of each piece because she strongly believed that everyone had completely different body types; therefore the only way for each customer to be completely happy was to make sure their garments fit them perfectly before they walked out the door. In 2006 Shernett Swaby outgrew her first flagship store and decided to relocate.
Her Toronto Flagship store is now located at 187A Queen St. East in Toronto. And she is now working on opening her second in New York. |
